Manganese in your water is not a myth BUT it is also not a reason to panic. What is a myth is that people who are getting city water believe their water is safe from all contaminants. Unfortunately, they don’t realize that municipalities do NOT remove all contaminants including manganese from the water at the water treatment centers, which then remains in the tap water that people (and pets) drink and use for cooking. Without much medical data available, it is hard to make a case for the need to remove manganese, except for the aesthetics of it.
When I go into homes that test positive for manganese, we see the following bad water signs:
- black staining of plumbing fixtures especially toilets
- staining of laundry (whites)
- clogging of faucets
- discoloration and odor in the water
As water quality experts, we at Foldoy Water Conditioning want to educate our neighbors in Central and Eastern Nebraska about the facts about manganese and affordable solutions available to remove this contaminant from your tap water.
There are two treatment options Foldoy provides to homeowners and business owners:
- whole house iron/manganese filters
- RO (reverse osmosis) systems for drinking and cooking (only)
Since manganese is a secondary contaminant and does not absorb through the skin, the most cost effective removal is RO systems for drinking only. However, a whole house iron/manganese filter will help to reduce the build-up on appliances including washing machines and water heaters which saves homeowners money on replacing stained clothes and energy bills.
